That full moon really was bigger and brighter!
By: KSBY Meteorologist Steve Adamson
Friday evening, I was wondering if the clouds would hold off long enough to be able to see the full moon that would be coming up over the horizon a little after 5pm. Mind you, this wasn’t just any full moon. It was to be the brightest and largest looking full moon for this entire year, and also going back to December of 2008.
With the moon at’s its perigee, or closest distance to the Earth this year, it would make the moon about 30% brighter than normal full moons and be 14% larger in size as it rose above the horizon. Indeed, most of the cloudiness held off until later in the evening, allowing for a spectacular view of the rising full moon. Even this evening ( Saturday ) the moon still looked dazzlingly large as it rose, despite being a little past the full stage. ( 96% of fullness )
We had some great photos taken by folks last night and sent into KSBY.com. I’ve included a couple of them to look at in case you didn’t have a chance to see it last night.
